MGHPCC Internship Program

Our internship program blends hands-on learning with real-world work that supports the thousands of computer systems at MGHPCC. It’s open to students from Holyoke Community College, Springfield Technical Community College, and TechFoundry.

Interns work with a variety of high performance computing hardware and software systems, starting with introductory reading and exercises with the Linux operating system, system administration tools, and Python scripting, and then moving onto hands-on work. Assignments vary based on individual skills and organizational needs.

Internship Assignments

Hardware & Software Administration

  • Reboot and run diagnostics on nodes experiencing issues.
  • Review log files to look for potential problems.
  • Assist with troubleshooting, and collaborate with remote users to resolve issues.

Infrastructure Maintenance & Documentation

  • Assemble, install, organize, and label data cabling for networks and Linux clusters.
  • Document Power Distribution Unit rack assignments and other hardware configurations.
  • Set up and maintain experimental computer hardware in the MGHPCC “Sandbox” lab.

This internship is open to students at HCC and STCC who have at least one semester of study in CIS, Cyber Security, or Computer Systems Engineering Technology.

Interns gain hands-on experience with a variety of high-performance computing hardware and software systems. The internship begins with introductory exercises and reading, covering the Linux operating system, system administration tools, and Python scripting, then progresses to hands-on work.

Assignments vary depending on skills and program needs. Examples of intern tasks include:

The internship is structured in 4-month terms. Interns begin with one term and may be invited to extend for up to two additional terms based on mutual fit and performance, for a maximum duration of one year.

Term schedule:

  • January–April
  • May–August
  • September–December

There is a minimum commitment of 16 hours a week on Tuesday and Thursdays at the MGHPCC.

We offer two internship cohorts each year:

Winter Cohort (begins in January): Applications: Sept 16–Oct 16 | Decisions by Dec 8
Summer Cohort (begins in June): Applications: Feb 16–Mar 16 | Decisions by May 8

Students who have taken CSI-121 Foundation of Linux and/or CSI 106 - Programing Fundamentals 1 are encouraged to apply.

Students who have taken CIT-130 UNIX 1 and CIT-115 Python Programming are encouraged to apply. 

After the application deadline, our team reviews all submissions. Candidates selected to move forward will participate in two rounds of interviews.

Final decisions are communicated by May 8 for the Summer Cohort and by December 8 for the Winter Cohort.
