MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences

MIT Brain and Cognitive Science (BCS) specializes in understanding all aspects of the human brain and neuroscience. In 2024, BSC added 6PB of storage and 32 H100 GPUs to MIT’s Office of Research Computing and Data (ORCD) environment, deployed for developing cutting-edge knowledge from brain imaging to artificial intelligence.

The OpenMind system is a collaboration between the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS) and McGovern Institute at MIT. It became formally associated with ORCD in 2023.

OpenMind serves as a platform that integrates computational tools, data resources, and collaborative frameworks to enhance research capabilities in cognitive science. It focuses on creating a shared environment where researchers can access high-performance computing resources, large datasets, and advanced analytical tools, facilitating complex data analysis and simulations related to cognitive processes and brain function.

Principally comprised of a GPU computing cluster optimized for artificial intelligence (AI) research and data science, it boasts around 70 compute nodes, 3500 CPU cores, 48 TB of RAM, and 340 GPUs, including 142 A100-80GB GPUs. It also provides around 2 PB of flash storage supporting fast read/write data speed.
